Winter in Crete brings some of the most drenching downpours of rain that are usually paired with high winds (so dubbed "sideways rain" by the local expats) so it feels like a hurricane moving over the house. But then there are magnificent rainbows to soothe the soul after the torrent. This one dissappeared into the sea at a point near Stavros Beach. Note the "blocked" look of the rock that is the shoreline. This was the site of an old quarry where blocks of volcanic rock were cut and ferried down by ship to the Old Harbor to build much of the fortress walls in the Venetian era.
Another beautiful day at Stavros Beach
Pumice stones at Blue Beach
Back in Colorado, our winter activities included skiing. Here in Crete, winter is citrus harvest! Our Greek friend, Katerina Manis invited us to her family's home village, Modi, where we tramped through her orchards and picked bags and bags of the sweetest oranges you've ever tasted! Efharisto poli, Katerina!
